Paddle steamers of the Murray-Darling rivers

echucaSm3

For nearly fifty years, throughout a critical period in the settlement of inland Australia, paddle-steamers on the Murray and its tributaries provided a vitally important link for the transport of goods, produce and passengers between remote stations and the ports of Victor Harbour in South Australia and Melbourne. While it did not last for long – gradually made obsolete by the railway system – the era of the paddle-steamers has an irresistible charm, filled with wonderful characters and a way of life that has become part of Australian folklore.
