Lawyer, poet, essayist, war correspondent, crack horseman, Andrew Barton Paterson was a man of many parts. He is best known today as the author of bush ballads such as Waltzing Matilda, The Man from Snowy River and Clancy of the Overflow, all written during a productive decade when he wrote under his pseudonym, The Banjo, for the Bulletin. But there was a great deal more to Banjo Paterson’s life, much of which is surprising and little known.
