A new book, In Memoriam Guide to the History and Heritage of Victorian Cemeteries, has been published that tells the stories of the state’s cemeteries and the notable Victorians buried in them.
The book has been written for a general audience, arranged geographically by chapter, with accompanying maps and photographs.
It provides a brief introduction and overview on the history of our cemeteries and burials, early settlers and Indigenous Victorians, and a guide on how to use this information for research and family history.
Every cemetery is listed with its location and a range of other important detail, such as history and descriptions of notable interments or memorials
The book, published by the Victorian Department of Health and brought together by author Garrie Hutchinson, will be distributed to Victorian cemetery trusts, schools, councils and libraries.
It is anticipated that it will be available for purchase in bookshops in Victoria from March 2015 retailing at approximately $29.95.
An electronic version of the book is also available for download at http://www.health.vic.gov.au/cemeteries/
